A return to the sky?

A return to the sky?

Can I really do this?

I’ve talked about “returning to the skies” to earn my Private Pilots License for years. I’ve finally gotten to the point in my life where it might possibly be doable. I’ve been a member of the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) since 1982 when I first soloed an aircraft. At that time you had to have completed your Solo flight to be considered a “pilot.” I joined as soon as I had been certified to fly on my own! One of the days you never forget in your life, like the birth of your children or the day you were married, is the day of your first solo! (N704VB, more on that in a later post).

The AOPA had begun a series of “Fly Ins,” to promote general aviation. I saw that one was going to be near my home and set the days aside to attend. My wife and I made reservations in the local hotel and left on a Friday morning to attend the week end activities. There was a program called “Rusty Pilots” that I was particularly interested in.

Friday was a blast! The people attending were wonderfully accommodating and fun to be around. The exhibits, vendors and programs were first rate. I attended the Rusty Pilots seminar and at its conclusion was convinced that I could do this again.

Groton Connecticut

Groton Ct, is a little more than 100 miles from my home. It is located near the mouth of the Thames River on the Long Island Sound. A nice airport surrounded by a rich maritime history and a United States Submarine Base. Plenty to do if aviation is not your cup of tea.

What sensory overload! Everywhere you looked there were aircraft of all types, sizes, configurations and uses! We spent a great day wondering, exploring and learning.
