The FDNY
The Ride of a Lifetime
I began my career with the City in the 1980’s. I could not believe that I was actually getting a paycheck for doing something that I truly loved. I could not wait to come to work. Each day was different. Each hour was different. Originally assigned to Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan, and then to Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn and eventually Elmhurst Queens.
From fires, to accidents, to hazmat, to protecting the President of the United States, I was doing it all. I treated paupers, millionaires, politicians, gangsters, movie stars, etc. I met some of the most wonderful people. Unselfish and mission driven. People like myself that did the job, not so much for the pay, but for the cause. We all belonged to something bigger than ourselves. We all felt privileged to be able to do the job.
I responded to all types of incidents, from plane crashes at Laguardia Airport, to riots on Riker’s Island, to the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.
In 1999 I was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the Bronx.
